Sweater #41

Placed on the site of the old Cook County Hospital, sweater #41 exemplifies the state of affairs in our health care system’s latest transformation into the modern era.  The new hospital exists behind this austere decrepit building, and serves many people in Cook County on a shoe string budget. This hospital also is adjacent to Rush Hospital and UIC Medical Center.  For a two year period, I worked in the Rush building just to the east and north of this site and would wander around this facade imagining the building in it’s hey day. For many, both with and without shelter, health care is still a luxury, and combining these two concerns in this image is quite compelling. It also symbolizes how many people who struggle with stability often are in need of proper medical care that is out of their reach.
