This sweater was placed at the Algonquin Hotel in New York City when I attended and presented at a conference. I just love hotel lobbies. It’s like entering a dream like state or a theatrical production as the hotel presents their ideal identity. And, almost always, this image or place seems incongruous to the environment outside the door. In a place where space is a premium, the large lobby full of comfortable seating arrangements was more inviting and appealing than my own home. Previous sweaters have also been placed at hotels throughout the country, and like those placements, I reflected upon the people traveling. Do people miss home? What identifies home? Is it a place? Is it feeling secure? Is it shelter? Of course, for many of us it’s all of these, but continually contemplating such questions is just a part of the project.
